Since this is Earth Month 2018, we're focusing on eco-friendly, environmental remodeling in our current blog posts.  We know from talking to our customers that people around the Twin Cities are very concerned about the impact their choices make on Minnesota's environment and the world at large.  Many homeowners are choosing to add solar panels to their roofs for their homes, and we've worked on a number of projects that combine a roof replacement and solar panels.

Adding a residential rooftop solar system is a great choice to make if you're looking to make your home greener. However, homeowners are overlooking one very important aspect that comes with solar panels - the roofing system that they are installed on.  If you're thinking about solar panels but your roof is still in good shape, you probably haven't even considered the possibility of changing your roofing at the same time.  But it's something we highly recommend.

Solar panels are one of the best ways to make a home more self-sufficient and provide the necessary energy that is needed within. Many homeowners are looking to cut the costs of heating and cooling their homes, to power their homes and more. Solar panels can do this for them and also reduces the amount of electricity consumed and wasted.

Solar Panels on the Roof: Do You Have the Best Roofing?

Most residential solar panels have to be mounted to the top of the roof. Due to the heavy duty mounting systems, the type of roofing that is holding the mounts and the panels in place is very important.

As a roofing contractor who works in conjunction with solar panel installers, we recommend metal roofing for a few different reasons.

  • The racks have to be mounted to the seams of the roof, which can be done through the use of metal sheets.
  • You're going to want roofing that lasts at least as long as the solar panels are expected to. Otherwise replacing your roof means having to take the racks and panels down and then reinstalled, which is an unneccesary expense. In general, those getting solar panels want a roofing material that is going to last for at least 25 years or more. A metal roof can last twice that or longer.

Metal roofing is also a very green option to go with that is going to help you save even more energy costs since it is great for cooling and heating the home, while also ensuring that it is protecting the home at the same time. It is a great all-in-one product for your home.

If you’re considering solar panels for your home, it might be a good time to install a metal roofing system in the same process. This can be the best system that your home has ever seen, while also ensuring that you’re giving those solar panels a strong, solid surface to sit on.
