As green remodelers we're very interested in innovations which help to conserve energy and protect our environment.  Wind energy has been put forth as a viable alternative for residential power.  New innovations in renewable energy sources such as wind become available in an attempt to wean us off of finite, fossil fuel sources. Wind power has become a favorite of many people, but as discussed in this article, it’s not right for every situation.

Points to Ponder If you’re shopping for a renewable energy source as a part of your home remodel, ask yourself the following questions.
  • What type of air flow does my property have? Wind turbines tend to work best with steady wind which moves at least 15 miles per hour.
  • How much maintenance are you willing to do? Because turbines are constantly moving, it takes a lot of effort to keep them working steadily.
  • Electricity Generation vs. Cost Once you figure out how much energy you need to run your home, you will need to find out how much of that energy the turbine can produce. Are the potential savings in monthly energy bills enough to offset the cost of the unit, installation, maintenance and insurance?
Eventually, there may be a good home solution for wind energy, what’s available now may not be the right solution for you.
