Is Roofing Your Own Home Really a Money-Saver?

Posted by at 5:39 PM

Saving money on home improvements is a goal every homeowner wants to attain. And rightfully so.  With the constantly fluctuating economic status, we understand that you don't want to spend your entire paycheck on remodeling projects.

But will you really save money roofing your own home?

The installation of a new roof is one of the most expensive renovations you’ll make on your home. Understandably, if you're handy and trying to save some cash, you’d want to DIY it. You have a tool kit, a drill, a ladder and some knowledge of how a roof’s supposed to go together.  It doesn't seem too difficult, but before you get started, consider this question:

Is roofing your own home as easy as it sounds?

Some homeowners have successfully re-roofed their homes.  Others have not.  Some have gotten injured in the process or realized too late that the project was larger than they had anticipated. Calling a roofing company to pick up where you left off or to fix a mistake can be more expensive than hiring them in the first place, since you’ve already invested in materials and time and they may have to undo what you've done.

Safety is a big issue when you're up on a roof.  In fact, we don't even recommend that homeowners replace their own roofs - it's just too dangerous.  The price of hiring a licensed MN roofing contractor may be substantially less than what you would pay in time lost from work and in hospital bills if you were to get hurt.

It's not uncommon for homeowners who replace their own roofs to end up with leaks once they're finished. Unless you are thoroughly familiar with all roofing procedures, you may actually be damaging your home without knowing it. Even a small leak in inconspicuous area can be detrimental to your home, often resulting in spending hundreds of dollars to replace materials that have rotted  out from water damage.

Before making the decision to replace your own roof, be sure to ask yourself these 6 questions:

  1. Am I fully knowledgeable of how to install all roof parts?
  2. Am I physically up for finishing the whole project?
  3. What is my time frame?
  4. What should I do if it rains?
  5. What should I do if I get injured?
  6. Am I aware of the OSHA safety requirements?
  7. Am I aware of all the requirements of the roofing material warranty?

Even for a handy homeowner, the challenges of replacing your own roof may be a little more than you are prepared handle. After thinking these things through, is roofing your own home worth the risk?  If you decide “no,” reach out to Quarve Contractors – we can help!
