The Steps to Reroofing Your Home - Part 2

Posted by at 9:00 AM

Putting a new roof on your home is important, and you need to make sure that you know what you’re doing. If you've read our previous post on this subject and have done your initial homework, now you might be wondering what else needs to be done.  Choosing and working with a roofing contractor is an important step to getting the best work on your roof.  Remember, your roofing material is only as good as the installation that's done. Once you have your initial planning done, it's time to choose a contractor.  By now you should have a list of possibilities.
  1. Start meeting with the contractors.  Ask them questions, getting quotes, and see if they do free inspections. You want a contractor that is going to be easy to work with, be on time and on track with everything that you want to have done with your roof. You need someone that can provide references and is licensed.
  2. Choose the materials once you’ve chosen the contractor. You want to make sure that you see the product lines, what they offer and the durability rating of each one. This line is what you’re going to go with when covering your home. The right one matters, since it will last for the life of the product.  Be sure to compare warranties.  (If you need ideas, check out Our Roofing Options on our Pinterest site.)
  3. Once you've settled on a contractor and a roofing material, request a detailed written contract.  It' s normal industry practice for your roofing company to require a down payment, but you should not be required to pay for everything up front.  It's reasonable for the contractor to get some funds prior to starting - materials will need to be purchased, and you'll be reserving a place in the schedule.
  4. 03mar26b2a15Safety for everyone, your family and your pets, is important. You might be curious about the work, but it's best to stay out of the way of the crews during the process.   The crew up on your roof will most likely be throwing down materials to be disposed of, and you'll be safer away from the work area.  Keeping your pets and children indoors while work is going on is recommended.
  5. Make sure to have a final look at the roof before you give out the last part of the payment.  Is the cleanup finished?  Is the job was completed to your liking?  Have you received your warranty paperwork?  If you're satisfied all is in order, then it's time to settle up.  When you hand over the check for the balance, be sure to let them know how they did.  And since homeowners rely on recommendations of others, it's helpful (and certainly appreciated) if you're willing to post a review online.
