The Things You Shouldn’t Do on Your Roof

Posted by at 1:28 PM

There are many things that perhaps you thought you could do to your roof that are actually bad ideas.  The thought of putting something on your roof might have been a good one at the time, but you will soon find out that perhaps it wasn't the best way to go about it. To avoid roof damage, here are some of the things you should refrain from doing on your roof.
  1. 04apr02b2a15Mounting satellite dishes. While you may think that this is something that gets you better reception, it is also something that needs holes and screws to stay in place. These small holes will compromise your roof, allow moisture into the small areas and cause more damage than good.
  2. Ignore any piles of leaves or branches on the roof.  Nature may have deposited that debris on your roof, but leaving it there is asking for trouble.  Piles of leaves hold moisture and can be a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and other problems.  Not only can this allow moisture to seep under the shingles on the roof, but you could be looking at roof damage that may mean replacement or major repairs.
  3. Hanging lights from the roof edge. Anything that has to do with putting holes in the shingles, in the wood of the roof or anything else is something that should be refrained from being done. You want to keep the roof whole, and one way to go about this is by skipping those Christmas lights or finding a way to mount them that doesn't involve attaching them to the roof.
  4. Mounting a basketball hoop on the gable end. While this might seem ideal to play some b-ball, a better way is to go with a free-standing unit instead. Screws from the hoop base can cause problems.
  5. Adding solar panels. Solar panels provide energy savings, but they can also provide damage to the roof. If you try to install these into the roof, you will find that all of the holes you’re drilling are causing problems since you’re opening up your attic to anything that may come from nature (water, insects, rodents, etc.). You can ask the solar company to come install them with invisible brackets that do not ruin the roof.
Your roof is the most important protective feature of your home, but in order for it to do its job, it's important to protect it as well.  Installing anything extra on your roof can cause damage to the roofing.  If you’ve got questions about putting something up there, talk to a professional roofing company like Quarve first.
