Thinking about getting a new roof this fall so your home is protected before another harsh Minnesota winter hits the Twin Cities? When it comes to putting on a whole new roof to your home, it can be a big investment to make. The choice you make not only affects your home but also the family that lives inside it.
There are a number of roofing options available to homeowners. Of course you want to make sure you choose the roof with the best value and one that provides the best protection for your home. Some factors to take into account as you're evaluating new roofing are the life span and initial costs of the roof. But there are other things to be considered as well, such as durability and overall maintenance that may be required, because those are the things that affect the long-term costs. When you take a close look, you'll find that metal roofing tends to be the most versatile and convenient out of the other roofing options in the industry.
What Are Some of the Benefits of Metal Roofing?
Metal roofing can last anywhere from 35 to 200 years. Other roofing materials will need to be replaced in as little as 15-20 years. Metal is a great choice for the Minnesota environment; it contains recycled content, the roofing materials are recyclable, and it's also and fireproof. The initial expense may surprise you, since it is a bit more out of pocket at first compared to other materials, but if you consider it's extremely long life, durability, and resistance to damage, in the long run it's a very smart choice. And it's got an additional financial edge - many homeowner's insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners whose houses are roofed with metal since it's noncombustible.
The Types of Metal Roofs to Choose From
Aluminum, galvanized steel, copper and stainless steel are all popular choices for metal roofing materials. You can get it in a number of profiles: tiles, rolled sheets, standing seam, seamless, shake, and shingles. Depending on the look that you're after, one might be better than another. Here at Quarve our specialty is seamless steel roofing, but we do install other types as well.
Industrial and agricultural buildings generally have this type of roof, although it's becoming very popular for homes. It has a non-corrosive coating on the outside that keeps it from rusting with time. You're able to get 60 years or more out of this roofing and it can cost less than other metal roofing such as copper.
Aluminum is able to withstand corrosive elements. It is a lightweight material, but this means that it is also softer and can dent easier than other options. It doesn't need to be painted, and you can expect to get about 35 years out of this type of roof. It costs more than asphalt roofing, but it stands up better to weather damage and generally has a longer expected life.
Copper roofing will not ever rust and because of this it doesn't need a protective coating. It is one of the most expensive metal choices to go with. However, it is low maintenance and lasts a long time. Because of its flexibilty, copper roofing is often used on domes, dormers, and curved awning areas. The penny color may turn green with time. Because copper roofing is soft, it is more susceptible to denting from hail than steel.
Quarve Contracting installs metal roofing from Kassel & Irons, Arrowline/Edco, and Metro Roofing.
