Hopefully you've already read the first part of this series about metal roofing for Minnesota homes, but there is much more that you might want to know. This is because you want to make sure that you take advantage of the benefits that they offer. If you’re considering this type of roofing material, then it might be best to learn more about it.

Metal Roofs Are Not Noisier Than Other Roofs

One of the biggest misconceptions is that metal roofing is louder and creates more annoying noise than other roofing materials. This is not true.  (This misconception is based on how metal roofing over pole barns sounds, but that type of roof has nothing underneath it to absorb sound.) When installed correctly, metal roofing is actually the same as other roofing materials, including asphalt shingles. This is because metal roofing is installed over a number of other layers, including a solid roof deck. Insulation in the attic area provides further sound barriers.

Metal Roofing Doesn’t Attract Lightning

Lightning is thought to be attracted to metal things. Standing by a metal pole during a thunderstorm isn't a good move. However, in truth, metal roofing does not attract lightning to it.

If it does get struck by lightning, just by chance, it is far less likely to combust and catch fire than most other roofing. This is something to consider in an area like the Twin Cities where lightning is common.

The reason that lightning doesn’t hit metal roofing?

Simple. Lightning looks for a direct route to the ground. Trees are in the ground, poles are sunk into the ground, but a roof is far above level terrain. This means that the lightning most likely will hit something else nearby.

Metal Roofing Is More Cost Effective

Not only do you pay a premium price for metal roofing than you do for other types of roofing, but you’re spending this amount for the lifetime of the roof.  Metal roofs will last at least 40 years, most of them far longer than that. The best you can hope for with asphalt roofing is maybe 12-20 years.  If you have an asphalt roof, you'll be facing a roof replacement after just a couple of decades.  With metal roofing, changes are the roof will outlive you.

Plus, having a metal roof installed increases the value of your home.
