Spring has sprung in Minneapolis, and this year it’s supposed to be very rough on asthma and allergy sufferers, thanks to higher tree pollen levels. However, since we spend 90% of our time indoors, the air quality in our homes is just as important, if not more so, than what’s going on outside. Fortunately, that can be remedied.  And as exterior home improvement contractors specializing in green remodeling, we've especially interested in things that can help improve health within our homes as well as outside.  We're glad to share these tips with you.

New Windows If you’ve noticed moisture accumulating inside your windows, or worse, mold or mildew, your windows may be contributing to your and your family’s suffering. If in doubt, have a building analyst or Energy Star rater help determine if your windows need to be replaced. If so, consider going for insulated glass and double pane windows for a powerful way to keep water from getting in. When you add low-E coatings into the package, you’ll save even more money on your monthly energy bills to boot. PVC-Free Once your bathroom window is addressed, take a look at your shower curtain. If you opted for a PVC option, it’s time to go with something else. Studies have that these types of curtains can reduce the air quality in a home. Replacing it with another option is inexpensive and easy to do. Flooring Have you ever installed new flooring, only to deal with the horrible smell left behind? No matter how long you kept your window open, the scent lingered on. That stench comes from the chemicals used to install your beautiful new flooring, which can lead to lasting health problems. People with asthma suffer very badly from the smell. When shopping for your new carpet, kitchen or bathroom flooring, look for certification from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America for options that are alright for those who suffer from allergies and asthma.

When you consider that one in five Americans has asthma or allergies, indoor air quality takes the front seat when thinking about your health and that of your loved ones.
