If you're replacing your roof, you may choose the same color as your existing roof, or perhaps it's time to make a change.  Since roofs can last upwards of 50 years, you'll want to make sure the color you select is one that you'll be happy with and that will look good both on your home and in your neighborhood.  A decision that will have such long-lasting results shouldn't be made hastily, so it's a good idea to take your time and get some professional advice before the roofing goes on.  Here are some tips to help you narrow your color options down.
  • Check out the roof colors in your neighborhood.  While it's okay to express your own personal tastes in home decor and architecture, it's a good idea to make sure that changes you make to your home still fit in with the overall feel of the other homes nearby.  Having a home that stands out drastically from the others might mean it could be hard to sell, or it may affect its value.  For instance, if most of the homes around yours are covered in gray, red might not be the best choice.  If you'd like something slightly different, black or brown might be a better idea.
  • Consider the overall style of your home.  While you might just love the idea of a blue roof, if you've got an Italianate or Spanish style home, red or green would look more appropriate.
  • Does your chosen color go with your siding and trim?  If not, are you willing to spend the money to make a change?
  • Ask for a full-size sample of the color you've got in mind.  Then lay it on the roof next to your existing roofing.  You may find you like the original color better!
  • Look through home magazines.  Since these magazines are showcases, the photos usually depict homes with the right combination of colors.  Look for homes that are similar to yours.
  • Get a professional opinion.  Experienced roofing contractors have handled hundreds of projects, and your contractor can probably make some suggestions.
