(Note:  This is the final article in our four-part series on what's involved in pricing a new roof as well as installation considerations.  If you haven't read our earlier posts, click here for Part 3, which has links to the previous segments.)

The major cost of the roofing bill is going to come from purchasing the materials that go on the outside.  Since it makes up the largest portion of the cost, it will affect what you choose when it comes to putting the roof on your home.  While metal roofing is more expensive than many other alternatives, we still recommend it for homeowners in Minnesota, and with good reason.  You want to remember that since metal roofing lasts much longer, it can also save you money in the long run. You might save on asphalt shingles initially, but they are not going to last nearly as long, and you'll end up replacing that roof several times in the same time frame your metal roof will be functional as well as great looking.

What You Can Expect From a Metal Roof Metal roofs are available in steel, copper, aluminum and zinc alloy, and they can provide a beautiful look to your home. (We specialize in steel roofs here at Quarve.) There are lots of options so you're able to choose the color that you’d like, but in addition to beauty you also get the durability you want when choosing a metal roof. S
  • Metal roofing can be recycled
  • Metal roofing on average can absorb around 1/3 less heat than asphalt shingles
  • Metal roofing is expected to last around 50 years (some even more)
  • A metal roof can cost anywhere between $200 to $600 per square
Labor is Also a Consideration

You need to know not only about the costs associated with the materials that you choose to place on your roof but also the costs associated with the labor. Some roofing contractors might ask for a set amount, while others might go with an hourly amount (called time and materials), which can vary depending on how long the work takes.  Unless there are odd circumstances, it's better to go with a contract that specifies in detail the work to be done as well as the materials to be used, all for a set price.

A reputable roofing contractor should be able to give you the price ahead of time, and you can then be able to make the decision on what it is that you want when the time comes. You are the one with the ultimate decision in the end. You should also keep in mind that if the company is a legitimate company, being licensed, bonded and insured can also increase the price that you pay to have the job done. (You should know that in Minnesota a building contractor must be licensed in the state to work on a home.) Here are some reasons why it is important to hire the right contractor.

The more you know about the costs associated with metal or other roofing, the better chances you’ll have at choosing the best materials, labor costs and contractor for the job.
