There are always many questions floating around regarding metal roofing.  Perhaps you've already seen this exceptional roofing product on homes around Minneapolis or St. Paul.

Now, we're not talking about that corrugated sheet metal (often tin) you've seen on barns and other agricultural buildings.  We're talking about a metal roofing product that's manufactured specifically for residential use.

We understand that homeowners want a house that has a beautiful appeal to it, but they don’t want to overspend to get this protection and beauty. And we understand they also want to ensure that they're choosing the right metal material to cover the top of their home.

There are a lot of metal roofing products available, so how do you know which one is the best for you and your home?

Tips for Choosing Metal Roofing

The best rule of thumb to go with when it comes to choosing the best quality metal roofing for your home is to ask the roofing contractor. Since Minnesota sees a lot of snow, hail and wind, heavier gauge roofing materials are needed to withstand these conditions.  Here at Quarve we have two companies we work with, and their metal roofing is exceptionally durable and works well in our climate.

Some types of metal roofing are not available in specific areas, because it would not be practical to put on a home in that part of the country. Since Minneapolis is known for their harsh winters, lighter-weight metal roofing generally is not something that we would recommend. The metal roofing that goes on the homes throughout the Twin Cities area has to be able to withstand the conditions from the outside, which is why we recommend a heavier gauge steel.

The other thing you want to consider is the finish.  Some of the best metal roofing has a finish called Kynar, or Hi-R Kynar.  The finish is engineered so that UV rays reflect off it, meaning the paint won't break down and fade.  Some metal roofing has a polyester finish, and you may expect its color to fade at around 10 years.  Metal roofing with a Kynar finish is going to be a bit more expensive, but its look will last longer.

Metal roofing can be extremely beneficial to your home. But like everything else that you shop for, you get what you pay for. This is something that you have to keep in mind when the time comes to purchase the right metal roofing for your home. Choose something you’re comfortable putting on your home and that you can safely afford.
