Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's right for you (or your home). That goes for roofing as well. Steel and other metal roofing has become the top choice for residential builders and architects throughout the country for some time now. But is it right for your home here in Minnesota?

Maybe you've read about metal roofing, but you’re still undecided on whether or not it is going to be right for you and your home, here are some things that can help clear your mind on whether or not it is the right choice for you and your home.

How long are you going to stay in your home?

While metal roofing is able to provide a great return on your investment when the time comes to sell your home, it also needs to make sense for the time period you're going to be living there. If you’re going hold onto your home for 10+ years, this is the best financial decision that you can make. Metal roofing lasts a lifetime. But even the best quality metal roofing won't deliver a 100% return quickly, so if you are thinking about selling your home in the next few years, you might want to consider something else.

How is your roof designed?

This is important because it might actually be better for you to choose a metal roofing material over asphalt shingles, due to the installation process. Metal roofing comes in sheets that can be installed easier on certain types of roofs, especially those with steep pitches. Metal roofing is lightweight, while asphalt roofing is heavy and cumbersome, which can make hauling it up to the peak of a steep roof somewhat challenging.

How important is the roof look to you?

The look of the roof is going to matter when you place it on the home. You want it to look as good as it possibly can. Metal roofing has been placed on a variety of homes in all different shapes and sizes. Metal roofing can provide a nice, aesthetically pleasing look that you may not have been able to get from other roofing materials.

But if you're really sold on the traditional look of asphalt shingles, you can still get that same look with metal roofing. Just look at the home in the picture above. The roof looks shingled, right? Yes, but it's metal and not asphalt.

What are you looking to get from a metal roof?

A metal roof can provide a number of things to a homeowner such as energy efficiency, protection for the life of your home, a more environmentally friendly option to go with based on the materials being used.
