In a recent post we discussed how a regular roof inspection can help you prolong the life of your roof.  The weather here in the Minneapolis area can be particularly hard on the roofs that protect our homes, so checking out the state of a roof is important to both the life of the roof as well as your entire home. Getting a thorough roof inspection done every couple of years is a must.  In fact, check your roofing warranty and your homeowner's insurance.  Some companies require regular inspections in order for coverage to stay in place.  Haven't read that article?  You may want to click here and check it out first before reading on. But don't just rely on those periodic roof inspections.  Because of our weather and the other things that can happen to a roof, it's a good idea to check it for problems more often than that.  The National Roofing Contractors Association suggests this be done each spring and fall so that any problems can be taken care of before summer storm season or winter.

You want to make sure that you are looking at the many different aspects of the roof, not just the roofing material itself. Flashing, skylights, vents, and gutters need to be looked into. These areas can all be damaged by weather or other elements, and if they aren't in good working order, your roof could be suffering. There are many common issues that can happen on the roof that you should be aware of. So in addition to having your roof inspected, here are other things you should be doing to maintain the health of your roof and extend its life.

Keep Your Roof Clean

You want to remove any and all items on top of the roof that can hold water and other things that can cause damage. When this happens, you want to make sure that these areas are not rotting through the materials.

Don’t neglect the gutters, because this is also one of the most important aspects of the roof. Algae and fungus can also be a problem on the top of the roof for some types of roofing material.

Remove Standing Pools of Water and Snow Accumulation

When there is water on the roof, then you need to make sure that this is removed. This is important to think about because it can cause issues inside the home when it is leaking through the roof to the inside of the home.

Snow and ice that collects on the top of the roof needs to be removed, as well as tree branches or other debris that have found their way to the top of your home.  (After a storm that has high winds, it's not unusual for some tree parts to end up on a roof.)
