If the siding on your home is in sad shape, you may be thinking about getting it replaced before another Twin Cities winter hits us. That's definitely a wise think to consider, because after your roofing, your siding provides the most protection for your home from our often harsh weather.   But if you've looked into siding materials, you may be overwhelmed by all the choices.  How do you decide which siding is going to work the best for you?

Tips Twin Cities Homeowners Can Use to Choose Siding

There are a number of factors that need to be taken into account when you're looking at siding replacement. This isn't an exhaustive list, but it's a good start:
  • Budget
  • Personal preference or taste
  • Minnesota weather
  • Your neighborhood
  • Maintenance needs
  • How long you plan to stay in your home
Budget: A ballpark figure on what you're thinking of spending is one of the best places to begin.  But think not only in terms of initial installation price but also cost over time.  That's where you factor in expected life span, maintenance and repair costs, and possible energy savings.  Over tine those costs can add up, and what seems like an economical choice at first could cost quite a bit more in the long run.  That's where how long you think you will be living in the house can influence your choice. But keep in mind that your home is likely your biggest investment, so what you do to protect it is important.  This isn't a place to skimp on costs unless you're just replacing your siding to get your home ready to sell. Personal Preference or Taste: You're going to be looking at that siding for a long time, so of course you want to be happy with the look.  Curb appeal is important, but liking the way your home looks should be near the top of your list.   Fortunately there are so many different siding styles and colors to choose from (as well as your options to combine them), that you should have no trouble finding something that appeals to you.  Perhaps start with making a list of the colors you like (or don't like), because that will narrow down your choices.

We feel these two categories are the most important factors when you're choosing new siding for your home.  Watch for our upcoming post when we'll handle the other ones on our list.
