This time of year when people are spending more time indoors, they often notice issues with comfort in their homes.  Drafts, window condensation, and more are the kinds of things that annoy homeowners. And so we sometimes get calls about what might be causing the problems as well as what the solution would be.  One thing that sometimes comes up is fogged-up windows.  Now, this is something different from condensation appearing on the interior side of a window or door glass section.  Fogging happens between the panes.

When you have a window in your home that is fogging up, then you need to consider that the seal has most likely failed.  Usually when the seal of the window is broken or harmed, then it can cause this problem to happen. So, is it repairable, or does the window need to be replaced?

Causes of Fogged Window Glass

The most common cause of a fogged window glass is a broken seal. This can cause more problems than just fogged glass, especially when it is wet outside. The condensation can actually get into the home and ruin the walls and foundation if it continues to leak. Mold and mildew can build up, causing even more issues to arise.

If the broken seal is not fixed, it can also cause your energy bills to rise in addition to causing the glass on the window to fog up.  A failed seal means air is leaking as well.

Should You Replace or Repair a Window with a Failed Seal?

There are a few options that you can choose from depending on the seriousness of the issues in the window, as well as your own personal approach or wants with the window.

  1. Replacing the window – if the window is old, you’re most likely paying more in your electric and it is just time to replace the window. There are many signs, not just this one that show that you need a new window put in.
  2. Replacing the sash – If the window itself is in good condition, the window sash can just be replaced because this is where the seal is. When it is broken, you don’t have to sacrifice the entire window.
  3. Replace the glass – the glass of the window can also be replaced, because a new seal is put in with that process.
